PW05 NEW! Better than Natural Light

Working with natural/available light is a skill we all should master as photographers, but what happens when the light available to you is too little or too harsh or changing by the second as the clouds lift with no concern for your photo? This is where the mastery of flash comes to play. Learning to create images with flash that LOOK like they were captured in natural light is the focus of this walk. Daniel will bring battery powered flash gear and together you will create magazine quality lighting.

Participants should bring cameras and lenses as they will get the opportunity to work with the gear and produce a portrait.

PW11 "Don't Forget The Groom!" Easy Steps to Incorporate OCF with Natural light to Create Dramatic Portraits

One thing I struggled with early on in my career as a photographer was managing the time that I had scheduled on a wedding day vs the time that I actually ended up having. The bride and groom are late getting ready, hair and make up take longer than expected…so many reasons as to why your timeline can get cut short. A big part of that problem is that I found myself focusing much of that time on the bride and very little on the groom! This bothered me, as the groom is just as important on the wedding day as the bride! During this photo walk, I will show you how to incorporate natural light as well as off-camera flash using the MagMod system within the same poses and scenarios to create dramatic portraits in a minimal amount of time!

PC03 NEW! How NOT to be a Wedding Photographer

Sometimes the idiosyncratic decisions we make to follow our hearts are the ones that can change our lives (or even the industry) for the better. In this platform class, Jen provides anecdotes from her ten-plus years in the wedding industry to prove that offbeat decisions (the ones that make our hearts beat faster) are the ones that lift us above the competition. Going against the grain of the wedding industry led to success on her own terms, and more importantly it gave her a strong sense of self, fulfillment and happiness.

Luckily, learning to create that soft, natural light look with artificial lighting is easier that you may think.  In this class, Sandra Coan will share her technique for creating a natural light look with strobes and flash and give students the tools they need to create perfect light in any situation.

This class will be a peek under the hood of the sales process and get your perfect couple excited to open up their checkbook (or...you know, fill out the online payment form). Oh, and let’s talk about how to price yourself too.

PC08 NEW! The Secret World of Metrics: How You Can Learn to Use Numbers to Propel Your Business

As photographers, how often do we think about metrics? Metrics are the number one way to get a pulse on your business. Metrics help predict the future. You can use the numbers to tell when it's time to increase pricing or whether you might be overpriced for current market conditions. They can also help you understand which marketing methods are most effective. In this talk, Laura will walk through the metrics she collects within her business and how she analyzes that data. You will learn about leading versus lagging indicators and how certain numbers can foreshadow the future. Laura will also talk about a balanced scorecard tool and key performance indicators—two tools that can help you create an optimal path forward within your business. And Laura will give you templates to help set up your own metric gathering system. The goal of this talk will be to give you a process for gathering and analyzing metrics to help you sustainably grow your own business.

How did they add these brands to their portfolio, how do they keep them separate and how did they grow their different businesses simultaneously? These topics will guide the presentation and cover how they’ve learned to build a portfolio of brands.

PC42 NEW! Lighting on the Fly: How to Rock Your Flash FAST in 5 of the Trickiest Parts of the Wedding Day

Show Justin and Mary the situation where the photographer intended to go all natural light and they'll show you the situation where it all went wrong. Dark churches with blue stained glass, a "sunset ceremony" that runs late and is now a pitch-dark ceremony, torrential rain that pushes all the portraits inside or dancing under the stars with nothing but the MOON to bounce off of. When Justin and Mary hear from photographers, they always mention the same two worries with rocking flash at their weddings: It takes too long and is too cumbersome to set up and they aren't sure how to nail their settings every time to get consistent results. In this fast-paced and FUN presentation, Justin and Mary are going to show you their basic one-light setup that ANYONE can use and feel confident with! They will walk you through step by step on how to know what settings to use in different situations, how to cut out terrible, mixed ambient light that isn't working and how to create iconic, dimensional images that are full of life. If a fast, simple, authentic approach to lighting that creates timeless images for the generations to come is what you're looking for, THIS is the class for you!

Class participants will enjoy lecture-style lessons as well as small-group discussions as they dive deeper into the nitty-gritty of what it takes to tell stories, interact with subjects and release your films out into the world. MC40 NEW! Capturing Authentic Portraits of People You Don't Know

What makes a portrait memorable is how it connects with us in a genuine and authentic way. The best portraits often showcase people expressing their vulnerability and true self. And it's relatively easy to do this when photographing family and friends. But how do we do this with people we don't know? How do we quickly connect, direct and create meaningful photographs of strangers? In this master class session we will look at how to evoke and capture authentic emotion by establishing a genuine rapport with the subject. In this class, you'll learn: how to confidently approach a stranger and convince them to participate in a shoot; how to connect with and pose your subjects naturally; which lenses, camera settings and light considerations to keep in mind during a shoot; how to work with natural and available light to create stunning results.

She will present her art as a context for helping you understand why printing one's own work is such an integral part of being a successful and fulfilled artist. Eric Joseph, recognized expert in professional digital printing, will present the secrets of digital printmaking, providing you with a sense of confidence, truly useful technical knowledge and the pathway to making you a better artist. Bring a flash/hard drive with a few images that represent your work. Over the years, Peter has had the privilege to mentor many professional photographers. But the one thing that most seem to have a problem with is studio lighting. MC53 NEW! Everything You Need to Know to Master Your Own WPPI Competition Prints

Are you afraid of making your own competition prints? Are you paying too much for others to do it for you? Prints made by Yaneck through WASIO Master Print won numerous WPPI awards in 2018. In this class, Yaneck will share his approach to final editing and printing so you can create your own WPPI competition prints. In this class you will learn: how to edit your files to be ready for printing; all the final editing steps needed before making the print; how to select the printer that will be the most cost-efficient and the most reliable; how to select the right paper for your photos; how to matte and mount photos and get them ready for WPPI competition. Yaneck will demo all the editing steps and then we will be making prints, comparing them to see how editing and paper choice affect the results. We will finish the class matting some of the photos. Submit your photos before the class and they may get selected as sample prints.
